I just got one of those diagnostic reports done at the dealership, since my check engine light went on . They said I need new spark plugs which they want to charge an arm and a leg for, when I can get them for $10 each at the most.

It's Passat GLX with the VR6 engine, they want to charge $20 per plug plus wires and then labor ontop of that.

Four or six depending on which engine you have. Unless you have the turbo diesel in which case the answer is none. I would imagine the OE plug to be 10 - 15 dollars each.Labor depends on which engine. Our rate here is 70.00 per hour, so at a minimum you would need 4 plugs at 15.00 and minimum labor of 1 hour, although I would think it is more than 1 hour.

So 4 - 5 hundred dollars for a basic tune up, sounds right in line for a dealership. Perhaps you should consider an independant repair shop.

In 1996 the passat came with three engines. The
2.0L Inline 4, the 2.8L V 6 and the 1.9L Inline 4.

If you have the 2.0 or 1.9L engine you will need 4 spark plugs. If you have the 2.8L V6 you will require 6.

Sometimes the cost of replacing spark plugs is in the labour involved in changing them. I am not sure about the passat but I do know that some engines have to be lifted in order to change the plugs.

I believe the Passat of this vintage uses regular "resistor" spark plugs which can be had anywhere for $2-3.00 each. It's been a while since I've seen a tune up on a VR6 of this age so I don't recall how much fun it is to get at the plugs but V6 labor on a FWD vehicle is usually at least an hour.

Depending on the engine it could be as few as 4 or as many as 8, normally passats have a 6cylinder engine which has 6 plugs

Normally 4 but it depends on the on model, cause you get TDI - which is diesel and use different spark plugs, 1.6/2.0 L which are 4 cylinder cars and uses 4 spark plugs and then you get the V5 which off course has 5 cylinders and therefor uses 5 spark plugs.
