Re-read some classics, always good for the soul. I would also recommend Barbara Vine-aka ruth Rendell. As BV her books absolutely brilliant-though I love Wexford too. Really edgy and gripping -try grasshopper for starters.Nearly finished and am ekeing it out as don't want it to end. Will try Mr Clarinet, thanks for rec.

Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov
All other books will look second rate after this. Don't take my word for it go to the library and read the first page, you'll be booking it out whilst reading it and won't sleep till you've finished it.

really depends on what you're into! if you're like me and read scifi/fantasy:
specific books:
jonathan strange and mister norrell (susanna clarke) - good plot, well written
labyrinth (kate mosse)
and for generally excellent authors:
anything by mary gentle - excellently written, good plotlines
anything by terry brooks - again good author, but make sure you start at the beginning of a series
anything by anne mccaffrey
both series by trudi canavan (esp. magicians trilogy, v well written, good plot)
caroline stevermer (+ collaborations with patricia wrede - the enchanted chocolate pot - regency england + magic)
garth nix (only the sabriel series)
lloyd alexander
diane duane
tolkein (of course)
phillipa gregory (well written historical fiction set in tudot period)
i could carry the list on...
hope this helps, rachel

Try out AN EQUAL MUSIC by Vikram Seth. It's one of the best books I've ever read. Or, if you prefer older settings, you might like to try THE SWORD AND THE SCIMITAR by David Ball (I think - can't remember the author).
