It is becoming a big problem and I don't believe the 'fat and happy' line either. I used to be obese. I somehow found the strength to lose 5 stone and I'm a normal weight now and I know I was totally miserable.

I don't believe it's just because people are lazy and greedy although I don't buy the 'thyroid problem' either. I think the problem is this: food is so readily available and there are so many ways to be inactive. Once you go down the road of eating too much and being inactive, the weight creeps on, you feel lacking in energy so you find being active even harder, so you sit more, eat more, more weight goes on. It's a vicious circle. You hate how you look, you feel like rubbish, so to make you feel better, you comfort eat. Obese people need support, not ridicule but society shouldn't allow it to become acceptable to be obese and they should be encouraged to lose weight. I know since I lost weight, my quality of life has improved immeasurably.

That's an interesting point, joey, because if you go back to the time of the painter Rubens, plump women were definitely found attractive. Hence the word "rubenesque" meaning "Plump or fleshy and voluptuous. Used of a woman."

Nowadays, we know that obesity puts an undue strain on the heart and other organs, so it is correctly considered to be unhealthy and unattractive (why would a man want a woman who may die in childbirth or at an early age and not be able to look after their children, and conversely why would a woman want a man who is too fat to hunt down food or defend the family against danger).

The current obesity epidemic has several causes:

1. Lazy parenting - parents who plonk their kids in front of the TV or games console to keep them quiet, instead of taking them to the park to play.

2. Lack of sports in schools - a failure to instill healthy habits into children from an early age.

3. Lazy and unhealthy eating habits - not spending the time to cook healthy meals from scratch and therefore having a diet high in trans fat (which is difficult for the body to get rid of) and salt (which leads to high blood pressure).

Now, I don't mind if people want to become obese, but I sure as hell mind if my taxes and national insurance contributions are going towards paying for heart and obesity surgery, or disability benefits so these people can sit on their fat arses eating lard all day and not working.

Obesity is becoming a big problem, and it will be an even bigger problem in years to come as childhood obesity increases. Obesity related diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and liver failure are on the increase, and only by decreasing levels of obesity now, and educating the next generation in healthy eating, can we prevent the ticking time-bomb of bad health awaiting the future NHS.

Obesity is a problem, because to many people depend on fast foods and snacks, rather than have a proper cooked meal.Exercise is practically a no-go area today,as so many people are couch potatoes and video-gamers.
Although some people are fat through what they eat, some can have a medical condition.

Yea it sucks. I was 160lbs. when graduated high school and now I am at 220lbs. I hold the weight well but I don't feel right. There is too much out there to keep my mind off of losing weight. Like video games, TV, and fast food. Guess I am just simply a lazy a**

It's becoming a big problem, we live in a world were people are complaining that the microwave is not fast enough, that the 5 minute meals should be 1minute meals. Everyone is becoming self-indulgent, lazy, and impatient about everything.

next thing you know everyone wants a magic pill so they can loose wieght without having to excerise. (wait a minute do we have those already?) God Bless. love. Amen.

It's causes health problems, which burden employers/insurance costs/medical costs. Overweight people may not be thrilled with their weight, but could be happy about many other areas of their lives. And yes, some overweight people are attractive, and some thin ones are ugly.

The truth is, it's just not healthy. Saying "I like the way I look" and being overweight is an excuse to not lose the weight. So don't come crying to me when your heart gives out.
