what is a merchant seaman and how much do they make?

From what I have heard from former merchant seamen/marines is they will spend up to 9months at sea a year (which is more than the US Navy ships will do) and the pay starts about 30k-40k a year with health benefits.

belive they are like a sailor but civilian. I know they travel the world and probably got a girl in every port.
