I love to dance, and I understand why people learn to do ballroom dancing, but I don't get the competitions. The style of dancing done there is so phony and grotesque, with those sh*t grins and propped up butts and dripping make-up and fancy hair dos..... what is the attraction?

You are not going to like my answer, but I just have to give it because I'm a competitor.

The attraction is dancing itself, believe it or not. When you learn dancing seriously, it is never finished, it is always "work in progress". (It kinda rubs me the wrong way when somebody asks "Do you know Waltz?" Nobody knows Waltz...) For the competition, you pull it all together and show the best that you can show. I'm sorry that some of it looks grotesque to you. I'm just learning and trying my best. It really is not supposed to look bad. It supposed to look very very good. It's just the skill that you happen to observe is not that great yet. As for fake smiles - they are not supposed to be fake either. But you know what? If someone just ran into you 2 seconds ago and hit you with an elbow in your ribs your smile can't look natural anymore. As for fancy hairdos and crazy makeups - maybe you're watching 80s movies. Today's hairstyles are not that fancy - just a clean bun for the ladies and normal hairstyle for the men. Feathers are out of style, too, just so that you know. Makeup is not any worse than any other stage makeup. If you ever walked up close to a ballet dancer they also wear a lot more makeup for a performance than for everyday. The trouble is, with stage performance everyone sees them from far away. So the makeup is designed for the "far away only". With the size and setting of the ballroom floor, you have to be close to the audience sometimes, but sometimes you are pretty far away. Far away picture is pretty important. This is why the makeup. That said, I had seen some terribly excessive makeup as well.

I think it is a matter of pride and recognition. They work hard to learn a dance and make it look good. A competition is a chance for them to strut their stuff among their peers

Why does any person like what they like? I don't really get why people would like ballroom dancing competitions but I also don't get why people like other things like video games, and other things like that.

I was wondering that myself, My watches that stuff, like dancing with the Stars, and she loves it. Personally i think it's boring, and stupid.

It's just one of those things that if you get it, you get it, and if you don't, you don't. I personally think the guys look like a bunch of nancy boys, and the girls look like a bunch of thunder thighed makeup drenched mannequins, but that's just me.
