So I'm asking for tips - like, what do you do when - no matter what you do, even if you do your favourite things, things that normally calm you down or make you feel good - what would you do if even these don't help?

A cup of tea; 10 minutes of exercise; a walk in the garden; dinner at the coffee shop; 10 minutes of reading; a prayer; a few minutes of music...I've tried all of these, in one night, yet I'm still highly strung.

Perhaps the only thing that makes me happy is the hour of late night cartoons on TV.

Anyway, I've had a bad year - and maybe it's just pouring now (when it rains, it pours).

Thanks for reading. And f.y.i., I'd appreciate it if your tips/ ideas are inexpensive/ free ones.

I had a leak in my roof and when it rained some of the water was settling on the plaster ceiling and staining it. So, I got a can of Kilz primer and stain blocker and covered it, then I painted over the stain and it was gone - until the ceiling caved in. I masked the stain, but didn't solve the problem. I shouldn't have painted the ceiling until I fixed the roof.
The way I see it, you are trying to deal with the pain or depression, without curing the real problem. That is perfectly understandable, we do it all the time. However, if you really want to see change you will have to get to the root cause. Sometimes we avoid that because we are afraid of what we will find, we don't want to relive some pain, or we are afraid there won't be a solution. Those are real concerns, but you can't go on indefinitely masking it either, eventually the ceiling will cave in.
I recommend talking to a good counselor, pastor, friend someone who can honestly help you discover the root cause and then walk with you through it.
Just as a guess, there are a few things in life we all want; to be loved, to have a purpose and to have security. If one or more of those things is missing, it could be leading to your depression. Good luck. I hope you make some valuable discoveries and come out of it with some real growth and joy.

If you think your depression is mild, anything that distracts you from your sad thoughts would be OK. Getting good sleep, a balanced diet, and exercise, and some sunlight is very important.
Get a routine that works for you, and stick to it. Get up at the same time everyday, exercise, fix a breakfast and sit down to eat it off of real plates and silver, maybe turn the news on. Go to bed at the same time every night. Find a bedtime ritual that works for you, chill out time with the TV, or online, soft music, cartoons, snack of milk and cookies, a warm bath. Make sure your bedroom is welcoming, clean sheets, clean room, temperature right, for sleep. And end caffeine intake 6 hours before sleep, and limit cigarretes near bedtime, too, if you smoke. Make sure you are tired when you go to bed, expend energy during the day, and early eve, so you are physically tired.
All of these suggestions are free, and since you have to eat sometime...
I personally listen to music on Launchcast, and play some gentle games on Yahoo! to make me tired, I have a light snack, and do the clean bedroom thing. Doesn't always work, like today, I should be asleep right now, but it does help.
And if your depression is getting in the way of your life, get some help, there are lots of places to go these days, clinical depression should not be treated by you.

Possible that you are truly/medically depressed. Find one of many "depression tests" on line. If you seem to fit the symptoms of depression, even if its just from a bad year, go to your doctor. If you need medication for it, it will change your life.

Sounds like you are well on your way to feeling better. It doesn't get any better but it won't get any worse.
