It is used in Italian to mean either "Hello" or "Goodbye," and it originally means something like "I am your slave/servant/at your service." The word "ciao" is a Venetian dialect of the Italian word "schiavo," meaning "slave." If you've ever traveled in southern Germany, you'll know that "Servus" is used exactly the same way; it also comes from the Latin word for servant or slave.

Ciao [pronounced chow] is italian for both hello and goodbye. You say ciao for saying hi to someone in italy and when you leave you say ciao again to say goodbye. But in the U.S. It means more like goodbye. When you say goodbye on the phone or somewhere else, you could say ciao.

It is Italian for Hi or Bye.... informal usage. English has borrowed it with the meaning of Bye, but I've never heard it used as a greeting in English.
Best Wishes,
Sue
