If you think that your child is old enough, there are several good documentaries that are visually realistic, too. One that comes to mind is called "Walking with Dinosaurs." Also, there is "When Dinosaurs Roamed North America," and several others from that series, including prehistoric animals like the saber-toothed tiger.

All the walking with dinosaurs DVD's are pretty good, great effects, they are made by BBC so are quality, I have Walking with dinosaurs and The Diary of Big Al (about an Allosaurs life).
You can get them on Amazon I believe, also check out Walking with Mammals a follow up about the extinct mammals afer the dinosaurs, like wooly mammoths, sabretooths, terror birds etc.
Hope this help you out.

Definitely "Walking with the Dinosaurs" and the making of it.
Both by the BBC, available at amazon, on DVD.
Probably the most educative and entertaining I ever watched.
