During an interview I was told no job offer decisions would be made over the next four weeks. I want to send a thank you email but worry it will be forgotten by that time. Is it best to wait a couple of weeks and follow up or just send a warm thank you straight away?

I tend not to do this. I think it looks desperate, over eager and suck but-y. No offence!

If i was you i wouldn't send an email at all, don't think there's much point in this. They definately won't have forgotten about you, as you will be on their files stating that you've had an interview. If, however, you don't hear anything after four weeks, get in touch then.

An email thanking i would write straight away or a few days at the worst, a follow up, i would do is a week after.
hope this helps

Follow up within the first week then near the end of the wait time - follow up with a phone call

Definitely the next day. The interview will be fresh in their minds and your letter or email will remind them of it. The longer you wait, the less effective a follow up/thank you letter will be.

Mentioning a topic from the interview is good. "I agree with your comment about..."

those days, digital mail is very perfect, really if it is a "technologies" company, or a company on the reducing area. sure, DO deliver a thanks digital mail thanking the interviewer for his or her time. because you already know this human being on a "quasi-chatty" foundation, they'd probable assume it from you.

Always within 3 days.....Handwritten and snail mail......Always the personal touch.....show that you are sincere, even if you don't get the job....Be gracious.
