better directly go to www.microsoft.com and download. Then you will know what they offer for free and what trial versions are available. When you are redirected from some website it cud be taking u to some other address which is faking itself as microsoft. U do not have to worry anything abt directly downloading from microsoft website. But dont think they will have too many bargain deals for u. free software is not microsoft ideology.

Its always best to type the address of the website yourself rather than clicking a link, as sometimes the link can be false. their web address is simply
http://www.microsoft.com
and after that, there may be a forward slash and some more writing which just means you are in a page on the main website, like this
microsoft.com/downloads/tweakui

Microsoft are the company that wrote your operating system - Windows. You probably have Windows XP if you have bought your pc in the last couple of years.
They do have a lot of free software on their website. Its safe to download and use it.
If its not free it will be called a 'trial'. After the trial period is finished oyu either pay or uninstall it.

There are other safe websites to download programs from, but you are right to be cautious!
If you want to be careful then stick to download.com and snapfiles.com
Also, check out the magazines; a lot of them have websites and some give away freeware. Theres Webuser and ComputerActive.
http://www.webuser.co.uk
http://www.computeractive.co.uk
http://www.windowsxpmagazine.co.uk/

If you want to know if a program is safe, you can ask on here. Give the download address by copying and pasting it from the address bar at the top of your browser.
You will get some daft answers but ignore them!
Also, if theres a program you want like an office suite, ask. If ten people give you a name and address, chances are its ok!
For example you'll see this one a lot;
http://www.openoffice.org
Its a free office suite.

Get stuck in and happy surfing.

First good thing to know is, anything on microsofts website is safe to download. Next, there are some things microsoft will charge you for (ie Office, power point). But, you will have to put in a credit card number and lots of info., so, i promise you wont buy anything on accident!

On the other hand, there are lots of free downloads, and you probly NEED to download them. Make sure you download ALL of you windows updates. Things like the download for the latest version of Internet Explorer are free and mostly likly a good idea to download. These downloads usuallly fix holes in the software that could ultimatly cause your computer damage.

Most of the junk emails we get nowadays come from sites trying to sell Microsoft's software. Unfortunately, they are cheating the public and are getting aay with it.
Most of this software is copied onto new CD's and made to look like the original; the only trouble is, you don't get the manuals or any other information.
If you need Microsoft software, go directly to www.microsoft.com and download from there. They have alot of their stuff as trials that you can try for 30 days or more and then buy.
You can also go to your favorite electronics store (such as FRY's, CompUSA, etc and buy the software there. Don't trust anything in email links, becasue these are people trying to get your hard earned money in turn for 'knockoof software'.

All the downloads on the Microsoft web site are free. Some may be trial and later if you wish to keep them you have to buy. This is only big programs such as Windows Vista.

Hi Bubbles

Yes you are just learning like this smart a*se hedgehog had to do. Here is a great website to use for free software update. It's www.filehippo.com I have been using it for years. Most of microsoft websites only give you trials. Having problems with speed of PC try Advance WindowsCare V2 Personal its free nad only take 5 mins to clean up fault after it is installed. One click to scan and one to clean. easy!

Now can I have 10 points for being so bright.

Take care Theluckyhedgehog

I have all my .exe files on my external drive so that if needs be I can re-install them. I have just recently upgraded to Windows 8 and had to re-install my `Office` and as has been said already it loads a trial version which you activate with your Product Key. I also have all my Docs saved on the external drive so once again if needs be I can transfer them to my C:/ drive. It gives you peace of mind having an external drive. So just go to the Microsoft Office site and d/load your particular version.
