I totally agree with the idea of looking at a pattern first. But, make sure you count yards and not ounces (or grams). Length, not weight is what you should concern yourself with.
Have fun knitting!

What you need to do is look at Patterns first. Every Pattern will tel you the size of the knitting needles and the weight or what kind of yarn is used and how much you will need for the finished item you are going to make. That is the safest way to do it. Now If you decide to add on to this blanket you can purchase additional yarn, if you mark the piece where the skein is started and ended that would give you an idea how much more you should purchase. Happy knitting, and Merry Christmas

That's a loaded question! It depends on the size of your needles, the weight of the yarn and the complexity of the pattern. Your best bet is to choose a pattern first, and let it tell you how much yarn you need. Ballpark idea, you will need at least 4 85 gram balls of baby weight yarn to make a decent sized blanket

Go to a hobby shop and look at the baby patterns, in the back it tells you how much yarn to use for a baby blanket.

Depends on how big the baby is...start with 3 yards and as the baby grows add on as needed!
