The Rose Bowl stadium in Pasadena, CA, hosted the first annual collegiate championship game in 1923 which came to be known as the Rose Bowl Game. Copycat games eventually sprang up using similar names to convince football fans that these other games were on a par with that at the Rose Bowl. Lost to most fans is the fact that the "Bowl" part of the name originally had nothing to do the the game but the stadium in which the prototypical championship game was played.

The old college bowl games like the Rose, Sugar, Cotton, Orange, etc were played in bowl-shaped stadiums, which were the prototypes for large football stadiums in the decades before pro football got real popular in the 50's/60s

The shape of the stadium is in the shape of a giant bowl. So, they decided to call the special games after the shape of the stadium.
