Whether or not you have a case against your employer really depends on what type of verbal abuse. If your boss or coworker is just a bear to work with and has bad people skills, then no; that's not truly harassment.
However if someone is creating a "hostile work environment" due to comments, jokes, cartoons etc that relate to a "protected characteristic" (such as race, ethnicity, religion, gender, etc) or are of a sexual nature, THAT is harassment and cannot be tolerated in a workplace. But you must report the incidents in order to make them stop.
If you have let your boss/manager or HR know about the verbal abuse you are receiving, and the stress it is causing; and they chose to ignore your comments then you may have a case. Contact the EEOC as recommended by Wicked Good.
Dealing with an uncomfortable workplace environment needs to first be dealt with internally, when that fails you may want to consider legal action.

I don't want to make you feel worse about your current situation as it seems tough enough. I personally couldn't/wouldn't stay at a job where I wasn't respected...or any type of relationship for that matter. I advise you to start taking charge of your life which means governing how others treat you. At the first sign someone's crossed that line, you must address it at once and be firm about it. As for now, I think it wise to engage in a one-on-one conversation in private. Tell him that you've had it with the yelling, the name calling, whatever AND GIVE EXAMPLES to solidify the issue. Tell him you're a good worker but you can be much better if only he'd stop. From now on keep a detailed log of any future bad conduct (include date, time, what exactly was said). If you just want to quit, a letter in writing would then be appropriate stating clearly the reasons for your resignation.

Lots of Luck.

Probably not. Sadly, a screaming yellling boss does not constitute a law suit. If he is making racist or sexual remarks, then you can report him to the company HR department.
Best thing to do with an explosive boss is to listen to his directions, but not take his anger personally. Detatch from the anger part and simply follow orders without getting upset. Get the book, "Working With You Is Killing Me".

Write a letter outlining the abuse, keep a copy and supply your boss with a copy. If it doesn't stop go contact the EEOC.

They will advice you on what steps to take and tell you if you have a case.
