It won't cause a fire, but if you don't have the proper security software -- it may lead to DoS attacks and other viruses that could come through your connection.

Yes, you can leave your DSL modem for as long you like. I have left my modem On for more than 3 months at a stretch. However.....
All modem manufacturers recommend that the device be shutdown completely for atleast an hour, once, every week. This is for a number of reasons and this isn't the page to run that length.
I too recommend shutting down modems once every week unless they know what they are doing.
Cable modems are ok for the long run. DSL are a different story.

No it will not cause a fire. At least as long as it is not damaged. I have had a cable modem and router on since '97 with no problems. From a security stand point I would use a router and software firewall, if you plan on keeping your computer on also.

No issues in leaving it on all the time. Just make sure taht u have good security system running on it. Else understand taht you will be susceptible to attacks all the time.
