I am 32 weeks pregnant today to my amazement the doctor heard two heartbeats. At the moment he`s not sure If I am having twins or not, but my question is if I am having twins wouldn`t it appear on the ultrasound? A lot of people see me and ask am I due any time soon however I have until feb before I have the baby, but I just figured that I had a lot of water weight and the baby would be at least 8 lbs, but now the twins thingy has me wondering. I mean wouldn`t it be known from the start or do women normally go into labor and sometimes they end up having twins? I am a small person weighed 120 at 5`6 before the pregnancy so wouldnt` it be evident that I am pregnant with twins before 32 weeks?

Unless you have repeated ultrasounds, its actually not impossible for the technician to miss the second baby. Ultrasounds dont read mass behind mass, they only show whats directly beneith the reciever, and if the second baby is laying directly under the first baby (which is what usually happens) it can go unnoticed.

Its not very common that you go this far into pregnancy carrying twins and not knowing it, but it certainly has happened before.

With the doppler, the doctor usually just listens for that first heart beat, and assumes thats all the noise there is, he wont check the other sides of your tummy to see if there are two heart beats. And since for a long time the twins have a lot of space between them, the beats dont conflict on the doppler.

Ask your doctor how he missed it, iam sure he'll have some interesting reasonings!

Lucky you!

NOPE...it won't necessarily show on the ultrasound. I had twins and it was on the THIRD ultrasound till they finally saw the 2nd baby..he was behind my other one. Docs kept thinking something was wrong with the lil' one - ends up there were two..BUT, being that you are 32 weeks - you're probably safe & this will be a single birth.

If you ARE having twins, it's not so bad - I promise. My boys are 18 now!

Best of luck honey, Lynn

One twin can hide behind the other. The can see twins from 5 weeks on.

I would request an ultrasound!

It definitely should appear on the ultrasound at 32 weeks! They may be hearing an echo, which happened to a friend of mine who ended up having just one child.

Hi i am a twin and when my mam was pregnant with me and my sister she didnt know until about two weeks befor her due date i was hiding behind my sister so it was hard for the ultra sound to pick up the two of us. and also it may not be obvious at all that your having twins like my mam ran a marathon when she was pregnant with mysister and i so its hard to tell the babies could be tiny and the could be wrapped up in each other so it just looks like one big baby

I think we found about our twins when my wife went in for her ultrasound. They should be able to tell I would think. My wife was small like yourself and she ended up having twins that weigh 8lbs each....she was HUGE...I thought she was going to explode. lol..she went 2 weeks over her due date. But I would think they should be able to tell if it's twins. Kind of nice to know...gives you some time to prepare for them. LOL get lots of rest if it is...your gonna need it. lol (congratulations)
