No:
1) Fellowship
2) Two Towers
3) Return of King
The Hobbit precedes all of them, time-wise, but I THINK it was written after these three.
Also, there is the Sylmarillion (sp?), but not sure when that was written. It's like the "Bible" of Middle Earth (stuff about their Gods, goddesses, heroes, battles of ancient times).
There are other "Tales of Middle Earth", but again, not sure when those were written/published.

If you want the FULL version it's:
The Silmarilian
Unfinished Tales 1 and 2
The Hobbit
Unfinished Tales 3
The Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
The Return of the King
Unfinished Tales 4 (with some of the stories here fitting in just after the Silmarilian, it's in a weird order).
The MAIN books are just The Hobbit, Fellowship of the Ring, Two Towers, and The Return of the King. I'd focus on the main books unless you are a total addict for the stuff. I liked the other stories, but I'm weird.

The films are
1 fellowship
2 towers
3 return
But the books are:
The Hobbit (the story of how Bilbo came by the ring)
Book I: The Return of the Shadow
Book II: The Fellowship of the Ring
Book III: The Treason of Isengard
Book IV: The Journey to Mordor
Book V: The War of the Ring
Book VI: The Return of the King
Usually the books are published in 3 volumes rather than 6:
Books 1+2 are together called "The Fellowship of the Ring"
Books 3+4 are together called "The Two Towers"
Books 5+6 are together called "The Return of the King"
The films follow the order of the 3 volume editions except some of book 4 is left until the third film.
Tolkien wrote several books about the history, peoples and languages of Middle Earth that were not finished when he died. They do not directly work as sequels or prequels to the Lord of the Rings so unless the Hobbit is made into a film it seems that there will not be another film made for this series.

In the LotR it is
1) The Fellowship of the Ring.
2) The Two Towers.
3) The Return of the King.
However, The Hobbit (a different story with characters from LotR) takes place before The Fellowship of the Ring.

it goes as follows, the first book in Tolkiens series is the Silmarillion, followed by the Akallabeth, Which is really just part of the Silmarillion, anyways, then comes the Hobbit,( the prequel to the Lord of the Rings), and then the Lord of the Rings series starts, the first one is the Fellowship of the Ring, then the Two Towers, then the Return of the King. The Return of the King was his last book dealing with middle earth, though his notes, the Silmarillion, and several other of his books have been published after his death. He started a sequel to the Lord of the Rings called the New Shadow, but he never wrote more than 30 pages because he thought it wouldnt be worth completing.

The order is:
The Fellowship of the Ring
The Two Towers
The Return of the King
The Hobbit was also a book that was written before TLOTR & takes place before those events.

it runs as such
The Hobbit
The Fellowship
The Two Towers
The Return Of the King
The Hobbit is with Bilbo before Frodo was really around as is meant to be the run-in to thew lord of the rings trilogy. It was originally i8ntended for the younger reader to get them used to the idea of hobbits and dwarves etc. There was talk of it being made into a film also to be a prequel to the trilogy. There is quiet a lot of info in The Hobbit that make the understanding of the following three films a lot easier. These include Gandalf, the Ents (Treebeard), Dwarves and there attitude etcetc
VERCETTI "The Hobbit precedes all of them, time-wise, but I THINK it was written after these three"
it wasw written before the trilogy. My father has the 4 books and are alll first edition presses. They are worth a small fortune now.
