I use Oxyclean in hot water and pour it on the stain and then steam clean the carpet with any pet stain type of shampoo. Oxyclean literally eats the stain and bacteria out and the shampoo will get the dirt that is not organic.
Also, sprinkling baking soda on your carpet and vacuuming it will help a little bit too...at least on the surface but nothing works like a good steam clean. Make sure you rinse well though or you carpet will feel crusty on bare feet when its dry and it will attract more dirt. If you do that run the steam cleaner with no shampoo in it.
In my opinion, everyone who owns a vacuum cleaner should also own a good steam cleaner too. I hate dirty carpet! Even if the smell is gone, the carpet will still be very dirty and the smell will return shortly if you don't get all the dirt out from the matting.

Sprinkle baking soda over the spot let it sit for an hour, vacuum up. Repeat if needed, if the smell is really bad you can leave on longer.

TCP - but use it sparingly, and don't use it if you have a white (or very light) carpet.
You could also try Febreeze (worked on the car when my little fella puked all over the back seat)

after cleaning and drying very well, mix some vanilla extract with warm water, rub into the area. vanilla is a natural odor absorber.

Clean thoroughly with soapy water. When it's dry brush liberal amount of bicarbonate of soda into it, leave overnight and vaccuum it up.
