Clean the shavings daily, scrub the cage out with animal-approved cleanser weekly, remove any uneaten fresh foods (fruit, veggies, bread) after 1 hour, don't use care fresh bedding because it gets smelly quick, use wood shavings of some kind, and every few months you can bathe rodents in dry rodent shampoo, you can usually find it at petstores. Don't give them a real bath because they groom themselves like cats, for one thing, and for another, they could catch a chill and get sick if they're wet. Also, make sure the cage is big enough, don't get one of those tiny plastic box or wire cages, get a big tunnel cage, a wire cage at least 2 feet x 2 feet, or a 10 gallon aquarium at least. Tiny cages get dirty faster and get smellier, and the rodent needs room to run and play anyway.

Hamsters smell a lot less than mice - they're desert animals, so they don't urinate as much as mice do. (even though hamsters are bigger than mice!) With hamsters, you only need to clean the cage out once a week. The other good thing about hamsters are that you only need to keep one (Syrian/teddy bear aka the larger hamster type). They want to be alone.

Mice have a definite odor, and they don't like to be alone. If you get a mouse, get two females. Males smell really bad, I'm warning you...I mean, the whole room will smell bad and there's no getting rid of it. Get females! With females, put some baking soda in the four corners of the cage, this will help with the odor.

Keep in mind, hamsters are noctournal, so they will sleep during the day. A good thing about mice is that they are pretty much willing to be up when you are.

Clean the cage regularly, about once a week. Hamsters usually don't smell that bad if you clean the cage regularly, but mice sometimes do. Also, spray air freshener around the room once every two days or so.
Also, JR is wrong. Cedar is extremely hamrful to rodents. Use aspen litter instead.

Male rats tend to smell more as far as urine goes. But either way it wouldn't matter if you kept the cage clean. I had a male hamster and only needed to change his cage 1 time a week. The room he was in still didn't smell but when you put you head near his cage you could smell it. I had him in a 10 gal. aquarium with a screen lid.

I have three gerbils in my room, they are different than hamsters and mice, but my suggestion is to keep the cage clean, and spray some air freshener once in awhile :)

Don't get a hamster or a mouse if you don't want your room to smell... I had a mouse and cleaned the cage out reuglarly but they still stink. It just depends on what you can stand, I had to give mine to my brother, ceader chips and mouse pee gave me headaches. Good Luck!

The best way is to clean the shavings daily, or as needed. If you get a hamster, some will pee in a litter box, so that might be a good idea too. That way you just have to clean the litter. Avoid clumping litters though.

How about a hermit crab? they are common to look after, do not want an excellent type of maintenence, and are cool to reveal screen because they replace their shells typically. they do no longer make a lot noise... actually at the same time as they are shifting round, although this is not any longer some thing compared to a poultry or different squeaking animal.
