I have the base of the tree in water, yet the needles on the tree are crusty and they are turning brown rapidly.

MythBusters did an episode on this recently. They showed that most of the tricks didn't work, and the ones that seemed to prevent needles from falling off either made the tree look wierd or made it very flammable (hairspray). You should always make sure the bottom of the trunk is freshly cut before you put it in the stand. This opens up the cells in the tree and allows it to take in water.

I have always put sugar in the water when I set my tree in the stand inside. About 1 teaspoon pure cane sugar per one gallon of clear cold water.
Check the water in the stand twice a day. The tree drinks alot of water so make sure it has plenty.

Water it frequently.

Do you have your tree next to a heat source? Like a heater vent, fireplace or wood stove? If you do, you may want to move it, as that will dry one out pretty quickly also.

Happy Holidays!!

as long as you have a superb variety of adorns the pretend eco-friendly tree will look actual. enormously if it quite is a huge one, so i might throw some tinsel on it and cover it as a actual one!!
