How do i encode an open word file- my microsoft word cannot read what i wrote through open word on anothercomp
i typed my paper at school, using open word program. When i got home, my computer couldn't read the file. Please help me to encode this file- i can't download the open office through the internet because my internet is way to slow and it would take ages to get it.

try getting the protable apps, its smaller and has open office as part of the suite...otherwise you may need to resave the file from school in a txt format, the you can open notepad, copy the text, and paste it in office.

Portable apps can be found at http://portableapps.com/
you can save it to a jump drive or cd and that way you not only have the applications wherever you go, you can also transport documents and files from school and have the same program no matter which pc you use.

I'm assuming you used the default save in OpenOffice. If you have version 1, it would have the extension sxw. Version 2 uses the extension odt. It sounds as if you are home and only have one of those versions of the file.

You might try two things. There is a freeware viewer available at http://visioo-writer.tuxfamily.org/EN/ which I have not tried but have heard recommended. It's about a 3mb download.

Google Docs also can read OpenOffice formats but the size of the document is limited. Probably not a problem if you are working with text but if there are a lot of graphics it won't work.

you may have made a pdf file if so then you need adobe reader to open it
