The story is so complicated, so I'll give you a very brief overview

The Metroid game follows the ongoing saga of Bounty hunter Samus Aran. As a child, she was onboard a space colony called K-2L. When she was very young, the colony was attacked by space pirates. Samus was the sole survivor of the raid. The space pirates had left a very young orphoned girl seelingly for dead.

However, Samus was found by the Chozo, a bird like race with unparalleled intelligence. The Chozo adopted Samus and took her back to their home on planet Zebes, where she was infused with the chozo's enchanted blood and then raised. While she was being raised, she was also trained in advanced combat. In time, she turned into an incredibly skilled warrior.

However, the space pirates eventually decided to make a base on Zebes after they had taken an interest in the Metroids that the Chozo had created to exterminate a pest. The Chozo were forced to flee, taking Samus with them.

Eventually, the chozo returned Samus to the Galactic federation. Before they did, they gave her one of their finest creations. An advanced battlesuit, possibly the only one of its kind. The suit provides protection from all sorts of attack. It also has an arm cannon that can fire a variety of both beam weapons and missiles. The suit is also equipped with jet booster on the back, allowing her to jump almost indefinately. Along with this comes a powerful energy field while she is jumping, damaging any hostile force that touches it. Finally, there is a morphball form. This form changes the suit onto a tiny sphere, perhaps about 2 feet in diameter. In this form, Samus can roll through small gaps and even lay various bombs.

Samus used this suit and became a bounty hunter, being able to perform things that no other bounty hunter had been able to do. eventually, the Galactic federation asked her to eradicate the Space pirates on planet zebes. This is when the first game takes place. It was a n adventure/shooting game in a similar style to Xelda 2: the adventure of Link, where you had to kill enemies and find the various power-ups that would help you destroy all of the space pirates.

Most Metroid games have followed the same format, but the more recent games have taken on a first-person view, making the game far more dynamic. It is now a first person shooter, but in a completely different style to that of Goldeneye, Halo, Timesplitters etc. because of Samus' additional abilities.

Yeah they are awesome. I have played the original, the snes version, 2 on gameboy, DS version, and both that are on gamecube. They are really cool. i recommend them to anyone. They are just a little challenging to find things. You basically are a bounty hunter and you search through planets ( diff on each game except when you revisit for story line) looking for your power ups and abilities while fighting bosses, mini bosses, and annoying critters. Finding these things can be pretty difficult too. You should pick one up... I recommend super metroid for SNES first
