Lots.....
I don't know about you, but I find that horror stories are far better when I read them than they are when I see them on film.
Anything by Stephen King is a far better read than the (mainly) cheesy film adaptions........with the notable exception of "Carrie" I think.
Recent film adaptions where I think its worth reading the book as well would certainly "The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe" (CS Lewis) and the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy (JRR Tolkien).
Going back into the mists of time, "Dracula" (Bram Stoker) and "Frankenstein" (Mary Shelley), are both interesting to read because of the writing styles.
In detective fiction, Agatha Christie's "Death on the Nile", "Murder on the Orient Express" and "Ten Little Indians / *******" are good to read. Dashiel Hammett's "Maltese Falcon" and any of the Raymond Chandler series of books with Philip Marlowe in them are also good.
That should get you started..........

Lord of the rings is awesome!!!!!! book and movie so thats a bonus. Eragon is damn good as well but the movie looks like it might b abit on the **** side. Harry Potter's pretty cool...the 1st 2 books r abit immature but they get better the older the characters get...and the movies-well some r better then others cause they,ve all had different directors. Good luck!

I've seen/read very few books/movies where the movie is better than the book. (A couple notable exceptions with better movies are Jurassic Park and Fight Club; good enough books, far better as movies.) Otherwise, I'd almost always say check out the book first!

I have yet to find a movie that was better than the book. Some great books that were made into pretty good movies that come to mind are:
"What Dreams May Come"
"The Neverending Story"
"The Princess Bride"
