I'm not sure if this relates, but a few years ago I had a dream that I couldn't stop thinking about for a while. All I could remember was that there was a series of dark rooms and there was a frightened child of about 8 or 9 that kept running from room to room. I felt bad because I was trying stop the child and try and help them. I was not sure if it was a boy or a girl.
I mentioned the dream to a counseller and she said it was a fairly common dream and asked me if I was worried about someone close to me. It so happened that a close friend had recently admitted that she had been sexually abused as a child and I was doing what little I could to support her.
The Counsellor said that it often happens that when someone close to you and you yourself may have childhood issues, they get merged in a dream and the child in the dream becomes a shared vulnerability. In short you want to comfort the child because the child represents you and the people you care about most.
Don't know if that rings any bells?

There are no dream experts so choose any answer you feel matches your situation best. What do the symbols in this dream mean? what do little girls mean to you and is singing a metaphor for something? (this does not have to be sexual, of course). To some people the littel girl symbol may be a friend, relative or colleague or even a project which you think needs your help. The singing is a symbol of that help. Where are you in this dream and how are you feeling there. What does the girl look like and who does she or the way she is remind you of? Only you can work out the meanings of your dreams but you may need help thinking through the symbols. Look at my other dream answer if this helps.

First of all, to determine the meaning of your dream, we have to understand your background like do you have kids, are you married, any thing happened in your childhood and so on...
Due to insufficient detail, the following is my conclusion
little girl = someone you care, someone needs your support
Want to look after = feel responsible for
started to sing = how you handle things in your responsibilities
Being waken up = alert, reminder
On the outside, it seems like a dream of responsibilities. You have this urge to take care of someone or something in reality. Perhaps, for some reason, you don't have chance to do it or you are allowed to do it. Projecting being asked by a little girl could symbolize something you want to do. You may be seeking for some approval in things you do. The answer "Yes" shows how determine you are and "started to sing to her" is a way to handle things. You probably like to handle things the light and positive way in life.
Again, without detail of your background, that is merely a speculation. Hope it helps
p.s after mail from asker... Modification
That child you saw could symbolize your childhood. It could mean something in your childhood that you may have missed. Projecting a child back in the dream could be a reflection of the need you may want to have. In other words, you are looking for companion, respect, love, care in many aspect in life. Now that you mentioned about you being single and no children. I think it has something to do with what you missed in childhood. It is more than responsiblities, and you may want to acquire something you never had before. That is why the child showed up in your dream.
You have good feeling about it becauss subconsciously you get what you want (mirror image - the child), and to you giving is a way of getting in some sense, and that is the satisfaction you get from your dream. That implies you are seeking for love, care, respect, approval and so on in life.

Psychologists do believe that other people in the dream are in fact another faction of yourself. The little girl probably represented a part of you that needs taking care of. Have you been neglecting yourself? Working too hard, over extending yourself to help others, not giving yourself any 'me time'?
Out of curiousity-do you remember what song you sang to the little girl? It could be a clue!

Could possibly be a manifistation of a desire to have children, or possibly you are frightned of something and your insecurity over this is represented by the little girl.
