Because when it comes to sexuality, the only denomination that will not be affiliated with the rest of the labeled sexualities is heterosexual. I do realise that it is not all heterosexuals who feel this way but can you imagine the uproar if the categories were 'lesbian, gay and bisexual' 'Straight and transgendered'.
In addition to this it was heterosexuality mixed with religion that decided that anyone who wasn't hetero should be labelled as unnatural and threw all other sexualities in one category together. Kinda left hetero out on a limb on it's own.
I don't speak of all heterosexual people i speak only of the homophobes. Besides why not put transgendered in here, i don't see the point of the question?

The "T" in LGBT isn't silent. In my opinion, I think "Q" and "I" should also be included in this grouping to make it a little more all inclusive (although it could never really be ALL inclusive), to also include those that are Questioning and Intersexed. Just my opinion.
