I agree, I started out on size 10 1/2 and I got just some regular yarn, not the eyelash or fancy yarn. Just regular old yarn and bought a Learn how to knit book and sat down and I got the basic idea in about an hour. I made a dishcloth that night. I have been knitting for 3 years now and love it. Good luck!

I disagree with brandon. A size 15 is a huge needle. I have small hands and find them difficult to hold on to. A good size is a size 8 or 10 needle. It's kind of a medium size and you will use them a lot. I get lots of knitting books at my local library. There are tons of "easy" and "beginner" patterns. Look for patterns that say "make in a weekend" They will be quick and easy and get you going.

I started on 9's, and the person I've been teaching started on 9's. Not too big, not too small, and works for both worsted and chunkier yarns. I'd also recommend getting bamboo or plastic needles if you can...while metal is the "slipperiest", a) more slippery isn't always good for beginners and b) bamboo or plastic is much easier on the hands. The largest pair of needles I own are 10.5 metal needles, and after about twenty minutes of working with them my hands ache.

it really depends on what you want to knit....you could maybe try a nice scarf....get a chunky wool and use a size 15 needle...they will be easy for you to hold....and learn on...www.lionsbrand.com is a really nice web site with some free knitting patterns it rates them from beginner to advanced and it tells you how to basics and needles sizes and everything...hope that helps....

you want a size needle that is on the large side. Not the hugest ones but definetly not a small needle. Also make sure and use a yarn thats basic, no trendy, flashy stringy yarns that may have several threads twisted into one strand.
