If we are talking Tolkien or high fantasy elves vs. regular werewolves, then the elves. Remember that regular weapons will harm, incapacitate, or kill a werewolf, depending on how much gross physical damage they do. If for instance, I drop a two-ton weight on a werewolf, does the ensuing puddle get back up just because the weight wasn't silver? No. Silver just has the ability to instantly put a werewolf down because it prevents any supernatural healing and the werewolf bleeds out. For instance, if I shoot a human in the stomach, he's as good as dead, but it takes a while. Shoot a werewolf in the stomach with silver, and it neutralizes any healing and the werewolf bleeds out. The elves are incredible with sword and bow, and the werewolves have teeth and claws. Meaning the werewolves have to grapple with the elves, but the elves simply have to keep them at melee range. While the werewolves are trying to grab the elves, the elves are slicing off claws and feet, giving disemboweling strokes, and slicing thru any flesh or fur in reach, while the archers turn the wolves into pincushions from the rear rank. Sure the wolves may be healing, but in the time it takes to regrow a foot/paw you might have ten elves dance past like a living, armored quisanart. Julianne french fries, anyone? The only hope the werewolves have lies in their strength and speed - if they can hit the elven line like bowling balls and forego claw attacks in favor of scooping up elves and breaking limbs or spinal cords, because their claws will have trouble with the elves armor, but breaking an elf over your knee works well, armor or not. Now if the werewolves are of the (White Wolf) Werewolf: the Apocalypse variety, my bet would be on Albrecht and his packmates, because of their Gnosis abilities. A Raging Get of Fenris or Fianna is a sight to behold.

It depends how many shots the elves can rattle off before the werewolves close the distance.

I can imagine the elves taking out a few; however, the werewolves would keep coming, leaping over the dead bodies (well that's 'if' they had used silver arrows) or if not then injured bodies of their pack members and smashing into the ranks of the elves.

At this point things would take a turn for the worse for the elves as the werewolves would prefer close combat.

If the elves were prepared with silver armour and weapons then they would have a massive advantage, if they weren't then unless they're the 'Legolas' kind of elves, then they're going to be butchered.

What exactly does 'pitched battle' mean - does it mean that they are on even ground or something? I think if you gave a few more details it would be easier to decide - then again perhaps it would be less interesting.

Elves of course. They hold off the werewolves with their famous never ending supply of arrows then the sun comes up and the werewolves revert to normal humans

The elves would kick butt, totally!!! They organize better and carry weapons that can kill from a far, bows and arrows! Superior and suppressing fire will win the day every time, and with blade and club the wounded wolven will be finished off completely! Go Elves, Go Elves; it's Your Birthday, not for real day, just for fun fun!!!

it depends on the skill of the elves vs the skill of the werewolves.. if the elf has spent his whole life playing the lute and dancing through the woods instead of training with a sword or bow, the werewolf would win.. it also depends if the elf is using silver weapons or not..

Hmm. I'm going to have to go with the werewolves on this one. The elves may have arrows, but I doubt their sneaky fairy charms are going to work against werewolves; plus I'd imagine werewolves, being pack-minded, would be far better organized.

The Elves are tough to beat when prepared for battle. Go Elves!

The elves would win because they have bows (I'm assumiing) so they have a long range advantage, plus elves have intellegence while werewolves are only bloodthirsty.
