Dark Water (japanese version) The ring & the Ring 2 (Japanese versions) and 28 days later. I love Japanese horror, I think they are the best film makers in the world.

Before I read the rest of your question, I was going to say that all "horror movies" have let me down.
They usually end up being some ,way out there, fake 'monster'. (like Stephen King, love the books, movies, not scary)
But I watched the Grudge, which has a similar theme with the child, and the noise. Wait while i piss my pants.
I am way old enough to know that it is not so, but I had a nightmare after watching it, about someone 'crawling' up my stairs. I am too scared to watch The Ring.
So you are right, the Ring and anything from those same film makers. when a child can frighten me you know it is scary!!!!!!!!!!
oops! Sorry Steven King, I did like The Shining, and The Stand was pretty good (although, not horror)

I like to stick with the originals, Nightmare on Elm street, Childs Play, Halloween, Friday the Thirteenth...
Another one of my favorites is The Original Texas Chainsaw massacre.
These movies don't use alot of special effects, because they werent around back then.
I think this makes them more realistic and interesting.
I am also a huge fan of Stephen King books and Movies.
The Shining is one of my favorites.

I love the Shining. Jack plays an amazing nut case. My absolute favorite novel is "Alive" about the rugby team that crashed over the Andes Mountains with some surviving from cannibalism. What a story!
