I need help to get connected to the internet. At the moment we dont have a phone connection (new house) so i really need everything sorting out.
Who should i get my phone line and my internet through? I will maiinly be using the internet in the evenings and would prefer (as im sure everyone else does) broadband. Uk companies only please.
Thanks in advance for your help.

I also need to add that this is all new to me. I currently only use the internet at work, so have no idea about the whole process, or indeed what i should be looking for!

you can look up the prices for yourself on the internet - they're all in the region of £12-17 a month. if you're concerned about the service,
dont go for tiscali - their customer service is obscenely bad. Once there's a problem you will never be connected again. My mate has been paying for her tiscali broadband for 6 weeks and they still havent set it up, and they are threatening to take me to court for non-payment for a connection I cancelled about 6 months ago.
I use Orange / Wanadoo and its not been too bad so far
BT is a bit expensive but at least their call centres are helpful.

1st question: Do you want Cable or normal copper connection, although I am surprised there is no phone line going to the house at all.
2nd: Are you going to get a package (ie. TV, phone, internet)
Without these answers it is a bit difficult to answer your question but I would avoid AOL like the plague, also the so-called "free services" such as Sky and Talk-Talk as they are notoriously unreliable.
If you get a normal "BT" connection I would try Virgin Broadband and then continue shopping around as they are only on monthly contracts not annual. Also if you have a friend with an internet PC use theirs to do your ordering as you usually get all the equipment thrown in on Internet orders while you may not on telephone orders. You can check at the same time wether you can actually get broadband (it still isn't available to all or can be slow).
You may also like to check such things as "fair-usage" policies which basically means that your ISP can arbiterally say you have been on the net too much that month and download limits.
It is a minefield of choice so a system that may look like it costs more may have many more useful services which you would have to pay for with the cheaper providers such as free evening and weekend calls or even VOIP.
Also if you have a modern mobil phone whith email facilities you can track your order and read your ISPs confirmation email with that. I would suggest a Googlemail or Hotmail account.

Get the BT Total Broadband, free phone calls over the internet, you are going to have to pay for connection to BT anyway so may qas well have the all in one package. No I am not employed by BT just a satisfied customer.

Go for telewest, i have an 8mb package and because it comes to your house in a fibre optic cable (unlike BT's copperwire) the download speeds are mental! ie my average download speed is 1000kbs!
