"Matsuzaka agreed to a six-year contract that will pay him at least $52 million Wednesday afternoon, passed his physical Wednesday night and will be introduced at a press conference in Boston on Thursday afternoon. "

Is he worth it... heck no.... how many could get health insurance with that much? Prolly about 5 or 6 at least.... if you take into account the malpractice suits that 5 or 6 people might be involved with.

You seem to imply that there is a limit to what people should be paid as salary..... that paying someone more than they are worth is a bad thing. I would agree that it is absurd, but not bad at all. If you look at many people, not just athletes who are paid or have "absurd" incomes, the one thing that comes with that income is the need for tax deductions. Many use charitable contributions for their deductions. I know of several athletes who start schools and open medical clinics where needed for people who cannot afford it, scholarships and you name it. If everyone just made enough to get by, there would be no charitable contributions for those who need it. It is these large "pools" of money who fund the organizations that help the people who need insurance when they don't have it.

If you study the economics of the situation in detail, you will see it is not so bad.

Finally, absurd salaries for athletes is nothing new. My grandfather, who was born in 1895, had an interesting saying about these athletes. "I wish I could buy him for what he IS worth and sell him for what he THINKS he is worth".

At the end of the day, no one is worth $50 million. The only players that I have seen to live up to that kind of money is Michael Jordan who got $20 and $25 million on two consecutive one-year deals (he won the championship in 1997 and 1998).

What is $25 million if you have (in some ways) a good shot at winning the championship? That amount can always be made up with network, merchandising, and ticket revenues.

Hope this helps.

He may or may be worth it but the red sox dont care. it is monolopy money and they believe that this gives them a great chance of beating out the yanks(not winning the w.s. but beating the yanks).the fact is that this is not really a big contract. Its six years and 52 million. Thats something like what Reggie Bush got. They only agreed in principle so if he is not good in the majors they can cut him

Hey, if they could throw a 100 mph fastball, they wouldn't need health insurance.

Executives of health insurance companies get big salaries, too. Do you know how many Red Sox tickets we could give away if they'd donate thier salaries?

Of course he's not worth it. No pro athlete is worth it, its all a big bet by billionaire owners who want to make more money! They don't pay for performance anymore, they pay for potential.
