Give him something from you & your boys. Doesn't all this Christmas gift etiquette make you crazy?! Happens to me every year!

Yes it is ok that your boys just get him something. I hate it that I get gifts purely for the reason that I got that someone a gift. It is awkward. Why not offer to take him out for lunch as a gesture of 'thanks' for all his work for the troop? Bring your sons along if you are uncomfortable with the one on one. I'm sure he'd appreciate it!

I wouldn't feel obligated to get him anything. After all, this is Christmas, and the season for giving. If your sons bought him something, that's fine, but just thank him sincerely for the gift, and leave it at that.

Perfectly okay that your boys just got him something. It was more for your help than expecting a gift in return. Make sure you send him a nice thank you card and let him know you enjoy volunteering with him.

I would have the boys give the gift. that way it doesnt look like you just gave something because you felt you had to. it will look like the boys had been planning to give something all along.

I always make extra cookies and put them into little containers so I will have a gift to reciprocate for unexpected gifts!

You must be doing a good job, and he wants you to feel appreciated! He didn't do it to cause you unnecessary anxiety.
If you know a place he goes frequently, grab a gift certificate from there. It'll be convenient for him to use, and maybe splurge on an extra holiday treat for himself.

Yes it is okay that your boys just get him something.
The important thing is the gift must be from your heart.
