I want to go on a road trip from NY to LA - any advice?

Potential pitfalls, contingencies, what to bring, where to stop, what to do or see, and just any good advice welcome! I am a brit traveller and have never been to the States. Have one friend so far to travel with me.

Make sure your Travel insurance is good concerning Health cover - medical prices out there are mad.

If you're not to bothered about tons of sight-seeing and stop offs, there's lots of companies on the web who rent out cars that members of the public need driven from A to B but can't be bothered doin the driving themselves.

They pay the petrol.
