I dont believe anyone actually ASKS for their help, its just thrown at them and then they are expected to be grateful.

SEE!! We are supposed to be grateful! Might I just add that the US came in at the last minute to WWII. I know you like to think you "won" that war, but the allies were fighting for about 4 years before you turned up.

That would be very interesting. I like the idea. But how much time and money would be spent in the campaign?

Bad idea I know everyone wants to knock off the top dog but that is essentially that what would happen, recent poll in Europe wished the US would be weaker, most of the world will bash us until they need our help we are the only nation that get things done just look at the dismal record of the united nations in the last 50 years. As for princess get your info right some nations were exempt from Kyoto treaty like India and China if you really want to see what pollution is all about go there. Lovesthesun don't be so testy what allies are you talking about there was Britain the rest of Europe was basically toast. Britain could not beat Germany by themselves without first our supplies then the hundred and thousand we committed to the European theater so don't kid yourself another thing we were also busy fighting Japan at the same time.

I agree, they do push into everyone's business, they have overthrown more elected government's than any other nation, they are happy to install fascist dictatorships so long as they get the cheap goods from the abused cheap labour.

Bush claims to be leader of the free world, well the free world did NOT elect him and in poll after poll after poll the free world completely rejects him and his policies!

There is still a big question over whether the Americans ever elected him. They never did in 2000, that election WAS stolen!

As for saving our *** in ww2, well the US did turn up very late and had to rely on the Germans attacking Russia for an allied victory to be possible. Russia sacrified 9 million people in that war, the Yanks about 400,000. Russia won that war with assistance from the British Empire, (Canada, Australia) the French resistance, Poland and a few good yanks. If anything, (According to Monty) in many places the US was more of a hindrance on the battlefield than a help and have been ever since.

We had more Brits killed by American incompetence (friendly fire) in Iraq up until a year after the invasion, than were killed by Iraqis. The only reason the 'dumb yanks' haven't killed more Brits is because we refused to serve with them. We have had much more success in pacifying the south than the Americans have had in the north, because we employ intelligence on the battlefield, not racist ignorance and pure weaponry. despite the MASSIVE advantage in technology that the US has, they are STILL getting their sorry asses kicked by the Iraqi resistance.

I am glad the Nazis got a good kicking in France from the french resistance, and I am glad the Americans are getting a good kicking in Iraq by the Iraqi resistance and for the same reason. The US should never have invaded, the whole invasion was based on a mass of lies and deceit. the invasion is about pure greed and dollar hedgemony. A selfish energy policy and arrogant, ignorant and incompetent implementation therof has led to disaster in Iraq.

Bush should be impeached and charged with the first degree murder of every innocent Iraqi killed and every US soldier killed since the 2003 invasion.

Can I just comment that all this "my country won this war, my country won that war" stuff is laughable. It sounds like some people on here have real egos based on their perception of their country's history. But I bet not a single one of you who are arguing over this were even alive during the world wars, let alone fought in them. Whoever you think won WW2, if YOU personally didn't have anything to do with it then you can't have an ego about it.

Anyway to address the original question- it's a damn shame that you should have to ask it in the first place. Forgive me for being un-PC but frankly it was the god-fearing rednecks who voted Bush in, but America is a huge country and so many states are full of intelligent and sensible people (who I think culd do a perfectly fine job of electing a leader all by themselves) but just happen to breed less than the folk down south. In a powerful country with such an enormous redneck population you really have to wonder whether democracy is the way to go! Maybe votes should be weighted based on a person's IQ!

EDIT- Paul M, are you freakin kidding me? America emits 25% of the world's pollution despite having only 4% of the population. They are one of the only countries who refused to sign the Kyoto Treaty. Read this- http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/americas/1820523.stm

EDIT2- Ynotgayle, I was merely responding to the ludicruous comment by Paul M suggesting that the rest of the world needed to stop pollution when America is clearly the worst offender- and you can't argue with the facts. 4% of the population, 25% of the world's pollution- I am not bringing my political opinion into it, I'm just saying it's unacceptable to criticise others for something you do much worse. It would be like an American criticising Europe for it's obesity problem- completely and utterly ridiculous.

Good to see the Americans believing the Hollywood version of history - that Rob Roy, or was it Braveheart, won the battle of Bannockburn, thereby routing the forces of um, Peter Lorre etc.

1. The War of Independence was not won by farmers, but BY THE FRENCH. Yes, you had the French helping you. Hence you have places like Louisiana, named after King Louis.

2. You did not win the First World War. The clue is in the title. It was a World War, lasting from 1914 to 1918. Think you'll find America entered the Great War in 1917. Thanks for turning up. Did you get lost on the way?

3. WWII lasted from 1939, the date on which Great Britain (and it's empire) declared war on Germany. Contrary to belief, you did not 'save our ar5es on the Normandy beaches - because, apart from anytnig else, we were on different beaches) and you turned up in 1942. And we paid for everyything we got from you. In fact, only the French gave their stuff away, and that was to the Germans.

4. All Amercians should have their passports revoked, and that poxy US embassy in London should be closed. Turn it into something useful.

5. The rest of the world hates you.

6. And we laugh at you behind your back, because we have furniture which is older than your country. Which isn't even yours.

7. Bollox to the President. I think the Americans deserve the Idiot.

I like Mark G's remark that America wasn't in the Middle East before 9/11. . . Does Gulf War 1 mean anything to you Mark, or is it another conspiracy theory?

And why was Osama bin Bobblehead mad at the U.S? For having troops stationed where? That's right: Saudi Arabia. (It's in the Middle East.) And a day before President Bush landed on the USS Abraham Lincoln Bush pulled all the U.S. troops out of Saudi Arabia. Mission Acomplished - indeed. But whose mission?

I live here in the U.S. It's my adopted country and I like it very much, but I must say that most Americans, while very likeable, have not got a clue as to their own history nor the history of the rest of the world. That's why people like Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush get elected to the Presidency. Well given the presidency by the Supremes, anyway. Look south of the border and see how people handle a controversial presidential election.

I am not sure what country you are from but here is a little history lesson. We came into the war two years after Britain. Kudos to the British for fighting one hell of a fight and standing alone for a long time. Give credit where credit is due. At the same time before America sent troops into battle during WWII we were sending millions of tons of ammunition, planes, weapons, medical supplies, and food. To both Britain and Russia. Without those supplies you probably could not have held out. I say probably as you Brits are very stubborn. If your from Britain you have my respect and the right to ***** about America some. But remember we did not make you go to Iraq with us.
If your French shut up. You were out of the war before it got started. The Poles put up a much better fight with horse cavalry and Lances than France did with what was supposed to be the worlds biggest, and best supplied Army. Cripes Norway was better than you, At least they didn't have half their Army turn on their own, like the Vichy French did.
Once America got into the war we had more soldiers, planes ships, and money poured into that war than all the other Allied countries put together except Russia who had more men. But we still supplied them with the weapons to fight.
As for not wanting us to stick our noses into others business, suits me fine. But remember we were not in the Middle East when 911 hit. So if you want us to stay away I suggest you keep others from killing thousands of our people in the future, because if there is another 911 the Peace loving Liberals will have to shut up and watch. You can count on the fact that if it happens again we will destroy most of the Middle East.
P.S. The Blonde Dislexic is maybe the stupidest person I have heard in a long time. He has no real Idea what America is like. Our poor people have free medical aid, TV's, cars, phones, radios, food stamps for free food, and discounted housing. People in Africa have?

Actually most people are grateful for help. Or should be. The United States may have been late in coming into the war, (World War II) but the reason for that was people who believed like you do, that we should stay out of problems outside of our borders. If we had continued to listen to them, I suppose the world would be a much different place today and it's quite likely that you wouldn't be in the position you are to ask this question.

I wish that the United States wasn't so active that we could save our resources and spend it all internally. I also wish that other countries could take care of their own problems and that countries like Spain, Germany and France could do more to settle disputes and unstable governments that are nearer to themselves than we are.

Back to your question, should people around the world be able to vote for the American president?, well in a way you do, you pick your own leaders and if they are ineffective and don't represent your country well, you get what you get.

That's even more facetious a question than thinking that American's really want to control what goes on in other countries.

I think you'll find the Americans got involved in the wars for greed, rather than altruistic motives.
Their track record as a belligerant Nation is staggering, and their National Debt is something like 14 trillion dollars.
If the rest of the world were to ask for their money back, they'd be buggered.
Noone owes them any favours.
And why do they elect such morons as leaders?

YES! I've been thinking this for some time now. I'm not sure about some other countries but Britain should get an electoral collage of at least 50 because we are ~**~special friends~**~

no i dont think so we all have our own countrys to vote for. i feel people just say his the leader of the free world but really they are just boosting his igo and the the american igo. in reality american needs the other countries. look at the storm in new orleans. they needed british aid we sent them 1,000,000 barrels of oil so there oil price would not go up this is the richest country in the world why do they need aid. in truth the american companies are rich but there are very poor people in american are are worse off that the people in africa. however, the usa does not like people to see these gettos. america is a crumbling empire that will soon be taken over by china in truth when a country gets nukes there is nothing this great power can do ie north korea india and pakistan. why are they doing nothing because they have them. and will use them. in truth if there is ww3 the new hitler in bush will start it because he does not want to be second rate to china or india. which is happening. america is not free and they just say they are cus they can all kill eachother with there guns.
