The son (Billy, played by Zach Galligan) was a teller at the bank.
Drawing was just his hobby. It became his career in the sequel, Gremlins 2: The New Batch, in which he worked as a designer for the Clamp Corporation.

He worked in the bank - the only bank in town.
(I remembered because he had to deal with this awful woman who, because she was so rich and had her money in that bank, thinks she can just stroll into the bank right up to the counter ahead of everyone who was lining up for service. And she got what she deserved when the gremlins got to her chair lift in her house..... heh heh heh!)

I think he was a bank teller. I remember some old lady coming in to harass him.
Good Christmas flick!
