From what most of us are taught, cavemen used to fight each other and beat up their women. That was acceptable then but definitely not now. Times change. What was acceptable when I was growing up (kids playing out in their neighborhood streets after dark without adult supervision, walking home alone from school, etc I'm 31 yrs old) is also not widely accepted in these days. I also like Larry M's amswer regarding the women's choices during the civil war.

They were not really "pedophiles", they married women that would be considered "too young" in this day and age. But as for Jerry Lee Lews, it was not uncommon 50 years ago for a guy to marry a 13-14 year old girl. As for Presley, he met Priscilla when she was 14, but they were not married until she was 22.

Back when Jerry Lee married Myra, it was not uncommon for girls to get married and start their families at 13 or 14. I myself have a grandmother that was married at 14. Just like we don't approve of something like that, people of their generation don't approve of the younger generations living together outside of marriage. That's just the times that we all have lived in and been a part of.

They would be in today's society. But, in those days it was more accepted. Even Mary, the mother of Jesus, was only fourteen. After the civil war, most of the young men were gone and younger women had to choose husbands who didn't fight in the war and were much older than they were. It kind of trickled down through the years. Now is different than then.
