They migrate.

I live in the North East of the USA. I have a lot of reds and purple fall flowers in my gardens. The Hummingbirds and Butterflies stop for food by the hundreds on their migratory path. It's a beautiful sight.

Some species like monarchs, migrate. A very few are able in find cracks and crevices to hind in and hibernate. But most species of butterflies die in winter and leave behind next years butterflies in the forms of eggs and wintering over pupa.

The lifetime of an adult butterfly depends considerably on the specimen and the number of generations per year, the climate and whether the butterfly will hibernate or aestivate. Butterflies that have only one generation per year and thus hibernate have a life span of up to 10 moths. The adult Brimstone (Gonepteryx rhamni)can reach the age of even 11 months at the most. For butterflies with more than one generation per year the life span is shorter and it can be anywhere from 3 weeks to 3 months.

Most butterflies with the exception of a chosen few (monarch) will spend the winter as a chrysalis. This stage of development is quite tolerant of all conditions that mother nature can throw at them. The vast majority of species will pupate in October-November and will wait out the winter slowly developing into the adult stage.
Then when spring comes they emerge, begin to feed, and will look for mates.

hope this helps!

Actually, butterflies go to Mexico!! And, other places in South America! It is amazing to think about those delicate creatures flying that far!! Recently I went on a school field trip with my daughter's 2nd grade class, and we visited a migration tagging facility on the eastern shore of Virginia. We all know that they tag birds, to track their movements and migration patterns, but did you know they all tag butterflies?? They put little stickers on their wings, with numbers, and send them on their way. Very cool!!!
