Women would wear a coctail dress, conservative, no short hemline or plunging neckline. No really bright colors, though red is somewhat OK, it is Christmas. Tasteful conservative jewelry, heels, just high enough to be classy, not so high that she risks falling off of them.
Wear what you might wear to the posh hotel for dinner there.
Men would wear a dressy black suit, long sleeved dressy white shirt, and a dressy tie, with polished black shoes. A Christmas tie, like with reindeer and flashing lights would not be appropriate.

Since you haven't said whether it is formal or not. Don't under ANY circumstances wear casual, if anything wear a nice business suit and tie, if it is formal however a tux is the ticket (yes it should be black) as for the business suit, it should be black or dark gray.

You can't go wrong with a suit. If you don't own one, then a nice pair of slacks, and a dress shirt. You want a classy, but not over dressed, nor under dressed.
