A sphere IS three-dimensional. The two-dimensional equivalent is a circle.

It is the space enclosed in a surface defined as a distance from a point, in a 3-dimension space. Here I use x, y and z as the three axes.

If the sphere's centre is located at a point (a, b, c), and the radius is R, then the surface of the sphere is all the points (x,y,z) such that:
(x-a)^2 + (y-b)^2 + (z-c)^2 = R^2

The inside of the sphere is the collection of all points such that
(x-a)^2 + (y-b)^2 + (z-c)^2 < R^2 (< means less than).

If you apply this to a 2-dimension space, the resulting object is called a circle (the inside is called a disk).

If you apply this to higher dimensions, it is called a hypersphere.

In mathematics, we often use the word "ball", whatever the number of dimensions (even one!), to define all the points within a certain distance of a centre (same definition as a sphere). If we need to explicit the number of dimensions, we will say an n-ball for n dimensions (for example, a 5-ball for a space in 5 dimensions).

So, a sphere in 3 dimensions is also called a 3-ball.

Locus of a point, equdistant from a fixed point.

general equation:

x^2 + y^2 + z^2 + 2ux + 2vy + 2wz + c=0
with the centre of the sphere being(-u,-v,-w)

sphere is 2-dimensional, because every neighbourhood of a sphere is homeomophic to the open unit disk.
A 3 dimensional sphere is a surface in which every neighbourhood is homeomorphic to the unit ball.
