Yes. The original Flight of the Phoenix was a 1965 film directed by (the great) Robert Aldrich, and starring James Stewart, Hardy Kruger and Richard Attenborough, along with an all-star cast.

It is a fantastic movie, excellently acted, and with Aldrich's usual subversive touch. Totally turns the WWII film on its head.

Stuntman Paul Mantz died filming the final sequence, in which the Phoenix gets off the ground. The film is dedicated to his memory.

The star of the remake was Dennis Quaid, by the way, not Randy. :)

It's a remake of a 1965 film of the same name, starring Jimmy Stewart (and it's Dennis Quaid, not Randy).
I don't know about the "all the people were dead but thought they were alive" part. Sounds like you're mixing in a Twilight Zone.

The Flight of the Pheonix was recently re-made from a James Stewart film of the same name.
The other film that you are thinking of was called "Sole Survivor", about the crew of a B25 Mitchell bomber which crashed in North Africa after the navigator got scared of all of the Flak and bailed out, leaving the bomber crew to try to navigate home. They failed.

The wreck was spotted by a light aircraft 15 years later. It is only when the air force arrives to carry out an investigation, that the crew realise that they are dead (Having played baseball next to the plane for all of that time.) Navigator, now general, get court martialed. All bodies recovered.
