If you are from U.K. all you need is a passport. The visa requirement has been suspended for the foreseeable future.

Kiev is a truly stunning city. I backpacked through it so stayed in a hostel. Don't remember the name but it was on vulitsa Artyoma, although I did have to stay in a hotel on my first night (called Khreshatik right in the centre) and it was pretty standard, nothing special. My favourite restaurant was Puzata Khata. Dirt cheap, but I loved the food so much, It was proper Slavic stodge. There's really nothing better in my opinion. You must try 'salo'. It's traditional Ukrainian food. Basically, uncooked pig fat flavoured with garlic. It's vile but an interesting experience. Try it with a few vodka shots.

There's plenty to do in a kind of churchy-museumy way. My advice is to invest in a guidebook. Also, try to learn a little Cyrillic. Nothing is in English and the locals may not speak English very well so try to make an effort to learn a little of the language.

Have fun. It's really cool.

If you're a westerner traveling to Ukraine for 3 months or less then only a passport. Anything over 3 months requires a visa.
I prefer apartments over the hotels. You can get a much better place with an apartment then a hotel. BUT I had my fiancee at the time find an apartment. She looked at several before deciding on one. Find an apartment downtown and near a subway station. They have many apartments for rent on the internet. Google search.
I'm an American and I will never get use to the food they eat even after spending a year eating there food. They use mayonaise as pizza sauce on their pizza. They have many nice restaurants but these restaurants don't open up until after 11am. I had to eat breakfast at McDonalds.
The Irish Pub is where westerners hang out at in Kiev. The prices are very expensive compared to other places in Kiev. But sometimes you will like to talk English.
Visit some of the churchs. They are some of the most beautiful in the world.
Register with your Embassy. They keep you inform on what is happening.
I don't like the night clubs. All the ladies are there to pick up a western men. You can get a better lady by talking to a lady on the bus or subway. Everybody will know you're a westerner because we dress, look, act, and talk different.
Expect to pay 2 to 4 times the price. If it costs $2 for an Ukrainian then it will cost you $4 to $8. You are consider delicious fish. That's there mentality. Get use to it. You can't change it. This is why you should find a nice lady. She will save you a ton of money.
Good Luck.

Talk to the passport agency, and I'm sure they can give you a list of the required documents.
