Is it fair to say that because we all want perfection in all aspects of life (love, work, health etc)
and the fact that, this is hard to achieve means we are never ultimately happy?

The function of the brain is subjective to what a person has in his or her mind. The mind due to various personal orientations can be very different for different people. In this sense mind is the thing that explains things your have in your mind, so to speak, right now. Perfection is in the mind ... but question is, if it is, then where is contentment and happiness?

This I believe is very correct – unhappiness is dissatisfaction. We are unhappy because we seek perfection in all things. This is essentially innate to human mind that the mind is never content with anything. It always searches for things better than all things that are already there in its reach. Even when we rationalise and compromise in very realistic situations, we never quite lose the inner yearning of our mind for all the best in life. In this respect mind is not quit human. It is more like an alien entity. It has fascinations for the unknown worlds and unexplainable things in existence. Mind in its pursuits can take us into very unfriendly situation and uninhabitable places in the universe.

The fact the mind is a human mind is due to the reason that we have heart. Human heart is a special and very personal place in human mind. The mind on the other hand is impersonal and endlessly vast in all dimensions ... so vast that no one can ever explore it fully in a given all the time in existence. Our heart on the other hand is always home bound and contained in human feelings. It always brings us back from the unknown regions of the world into the company and closeness of our loved one. It is in human heart that the mind finds happiness and contentment - perfection despite all imperfections.

There is no evidence that people on Yahoo Answers know how the brain works, you might be better asking elsewhere !

In my little brain, much of the unhappiness is casued by choice, there is too much of it.

If there was only one type of bread in Sainsbury's, I'd buy it and be happy. As there are 50 types, I have to stand there for 10 minutes while the choice is made, and then there is a feeling of loss incase you've missed out on the best loaf ever.

Try this process with the majority of things. You'll find that if there was no choice, you'd be a lot happier.

Not all of us want perfection, i just want to goof around helping a few people on my way.

The brain works using electrical signals which are carried through the nerves to the individual brain cells which when stimulated trigger thought process or memory recall depending on the area of the brain being accessed.

In terms of never being happy in life i believe its all down to the individuals outlook on life. If you are never content with what you have then of course you will never be happy, you will always strive for more!

If however on the other hand you accept the way things are and that what you have is all you need then i believe this acceptance cant lead to a person being content and happy with life.

When we're young in a materialistic world it is hard to be content but as you get older you slowly begin to realise what is important to you and the things that really matter in life. As this realisation dawns you become more aware of who you are and what you want out of life, once you reach this stage your alot more likely to be happy with the things you have and so much happier with life in general.

I am no genius, but from what I have read the brain is basically a large electrical impulse conductor. It takes the nerve impulses from the different parts of the body and converts them into thought patterns that the brain recognizes. (Sight, feel, etc.) No it's not fare to assume that we are all perfect and we never will be. Man is not meant to be perfect. We all learn from our mistakes and grow from it. You are only unhappy if you allow yourself to be unhappy. Life is what you make from it. If you are unhappy, then you need to change the way you live to make yourself happy in life. Being happy in with your life does not necessarily mean being rich. I have know people during my time that didn't have a pot to pee in and where as happy as they could be. being happy in life is from inside of yourself. From the heart. It's sometimes hard work to get there, but the benefits are outstanding.

How does the brain work? Are you asking for a computational model of the brain, as in information theory? Or are you concerned with the actual physical dendritic pathways? The answer to both is, nobody really knows.

Happiness? Buddhism teaches that desire leads to all suffering.

How the brain works is quite a big question. You could do lots of computer comparisons, talking about nurons linking, like circits, but ultimately, given the level of knowledge as it stands at the moment, anybody who can tell you exactly how and why it works would be lying.

To answer your second question I refer you to an ancient blessing:

May all of your dreams come true, except one.

The brain is one of the greatest mysteries of this planet - no one has yet worked out EXACTLY how it works. And no, it's not fair to say that because not all of us want perfection: many of us just want satisfaction.
