It depends on your view of originality. If you mean that it has to be the product of no other influences except completely first hand experiences and ideas, then the only art that can claim to be truly original is art made by an artist who has never seen anyone else's art or heard about it. even if someone does a piece that is completely unlike anything they've even seen before, it was influenced still because the artist had to think of how not to make it look like anything else. I think the true value of an artwork is the originality of what it produces in the viewer and what the artist uses it for and to communicate, not simply based on if it looks unlike anything else ever created.
but if I didn't really stretch it like that, I'd answer no.

There probably isn't anyhting that is wholly original in this field and maybe any field.
Some might think it is really up to the Artist take the elements there around him and put them together to make something that is new.
Whether you think they are really doing anything like that is for the individual to decide.
Jusbecause there might not seem to be anything original in Art it does not especially mean that original work cant be produced.
It can be said to be up to people to find the thing which is 'right' even if it doesn't seem likely people are going to do this.

Original? To those capable of understanding design as it is always being in form, many have caught a picture of design to carve, paint , write or express in many forms to be on display for years but originality can mean, were you there when the first drop of rain was made or the first light spread across the earth, were you there when all things were original, the answer could be so, yet in which form was I.

art should be understood as a body of work by a body of people. it is original simply to have this much media moving around in this configuration. unfettered by the modes of primitive media such as paints or inks, visual arts have exploded into new territory. filmmaking is an entirely new art with myriad discernable styles. so is CGI.

but no, not really.

(did i have you going there for a while?)

Not much, anything that appears new is just a reworking of the cave paintings. There is no new design in the fashion world only re-workings of olod ideas.

I think the chances of creating something unique will be better if you use the latest materials and processes, e.g. freeform modelling (AKA rapid prototyping) or nano-scale fabrication- you can at least be safe in the knowledge that such things weren't possible 25 years ago.

NO..as art is only an interpretation of what someone has already seen, so how can it be deemed original.

Art that is not inspired by the work of others is not encouraged by art schools.

in case you're thinking of mythical creatures - what appropriate to the elementals? Air, earth, hearth and water all have mythical creatures of a few style linked with them. would desire to you layout the dress a timber nymph might positioned on? Or a dress in subject matter of the Sylphs, the elementals of air and wind? incredibly, Sylphs who collect contained in the air around an artist are stated to inspire her or him. or maybe a dress appropriate to the undead - ghosts and spirits? the opportunities are infinite.
