I got off to sleep ok but kept waking up, could that be the reason as I normally have quite vivid dreams?

Th reason I was prescribed them was because I needed to call for an Ambulance due to hyperventilating during a panic attack and had a pulse rate of 110bpm, I also explained to the doc at the hospital that I have trouble getting off to sleep due to a heart condition, so feel this is why they were given to me but I would be interested as my gp won't give me anymore, not that I'd want them, in alternatives. Thanx for your answers so far:-)

Hi! Your body is accustomed to Diazepam, my friend, that´s the reason...just tell your psychiatrist about this fact, so that he may give you another medication.
Good luck!!!

I'd recommend trying Valerian, a natural herb that helps you relax and sleep. Try a 250 ml dosage for starters 20 minutes before you plan to go to sleep.
I'll use 400 ml if I'm really cranked up emotionally and feel it will be hard to go to sleep, and then only on the weekends when I know I can sleep longer.
You wake refreshed with no side effects and will be able to remember your dreams when using Valerian.

If not for your heart condtion I would suggest Passiflora, which is a wonderful sleep herb that also enhances dreaming. But it is a muscle relaxant and that is not good for a dodgy heart.
Valerian is good but can cause lowness of mood, as can hops.
Oats are good, taken in tincture form to help sleep.
Lavender under the pillow, or a drop of the oil on the edge of the pillow helps, as does Jasmine Oil if you can afford it.

you should come off the medication. bensodiazepines are very bad for you and create dependency. they are only for very short term use. Try alternative methods of relaxing and sleep. Try relaxation cds and yoga
