Joann etc ( Joann fabrics' supper store) sells sheets of cardboard in their frame shops 32" X 40" for approximately $2.50 a sheet. They also carry 40" X 60" cardboard.
It's easier to buy it than to cut it off a box etc, especially at that price. Plus they'll also cut it to size for free.
If you aren't located near a Joann's, glass shops receive their glass in large flat boxes, ask them to save you a box. Use a metal yardstick and box cutter to trim. It might be neccessary to score several times to trim off the extra. Remember to always cut on the left edge of the ruler, away from the good board. Pull your box cutter down the scrap side so if you accidently slip, you woun't mar the project board.
Foam core board is also another option. It is available at most craft stores and art supply stores. A 20" X 30" sheet is around $3.60 and it comes in an assortment of colors. Larger sheets are available at the frame shops.
