As per the second part of your question, I think it is in the seventies that the research started.
Lastly - if everyone is talking about ice core data, it is indeed very much justified. It is perhaps the only way we can get a true and uninterrupted record of the climatic and atmospheric changes for the last several thousands years. That information may save the earth and save mankind.
