Can anybody give me advice on what I should do?
I have IBS, and even tho stress, anxiety and nervousness are some of the main factors for my IBS, I get morning shock every day, especially in the winter when its colder. I turn the thermostat high, wear lots of layers and sleep with an electric heating blanket, but when I wake up my body goes into shock and irritates my stomach really badly! (especially when i step outside). The only way I have avoided morning shock to my stomach is to wake up later in the afternoon (when it's warmer), but obviously I cannot do this everyday! Any advice? My doctor has been helpless.

Hello McAvoy21,

Just a couple suggestions: try turning the thermostat down to a little lower level during the night time and ditch the electric blanket. Keep a warm robe near your bed so you can put it on as soon as you get out of bed. Eat a bowl of HOT oatmeal and take a HOT bath before dressing for the day. Make a concious effort to relax your muscles, and use proper breathing. Hope some of these suggestions help.

Good luck

S

If your doctor is helpless, get another doctor.

It is not clear to me whether this is clearly Irritable Bowel Syndrome. It is often a difficult diagnosis. There are other conditions of the colon that can be mistaken for this. There are also medications that are indicated; but I don't want to load the dice here.

It is imperative that someone competant in GI disorders evaluates you, most likely by a colonoscopy, among other tests. Once these are done, then the proper treatment can be prescribed.

I have IBS and have never heard of 'morning shock' or cold weather making it worse, sorry. Maybe try some Pepto about 30 minutes before you get out of bed?
