From what I know, Lega Nord is pretty prevalent in parts of Northern Italy, especially Torino. They're well known for their racism, even though it seems more subtle to those of us in the US. As a culture though, Italians seem to be having a harder time accepting other cultures---they tend to see themselves as the "first and real people" still. That doesn't go for everyone, of course, but that tendency is there.

I have no frame of reference for Torino Italy, but my take is people are generally intimidated by people who openly state racist remarks. People don't like causing a seen, so they'll keep their feelings under their breath.
It'll take a strong leader before somebody takes an official stand.
