It's a device that they use in a lot of comedys, it's a gimmick basically. In Frasier you never see Nile's wife Maris, in Will + Grace you never see Karen's husband, in the old series Minder you never saw Arthur Daley's wife, but all these people are referred to constantly.

I think it was just a hook to keep people watching just in case they showed his face. They never slipped up though, but at the end of the very last episode they finnaly did.

I'm not sure but my friend told me...that apparently he's got something wrong with his chin, & he didn't want it to be seen!!
But I just wanna add, do you (as the asker) kno why Jonathon Taylor Thomas was never seen in the finale, when they all goodbye, or was he & I jus missed it??
