its so that when they're swimming around in the see they don't get eaten! From below all the sharks can see is the white of their belly so they match the sky/ice and from above the superlarge birds just see black so the blend in with the sea! Bobs you uncle!!! x

It's camouflage for when they're in the sea. From above they look dark like the water, but from below they look light and don't show up against the light on the surface. A lot of aquatic or semi-aquatic animals have the same thing.

the black on top and white underneath, is found on most marine predators
ie sharks
looking down the dark top makes it difficult to see against the blackness of the deep water
looking up the white underbelly is difficult to see against the light surface...
therefore it difficult to for prey to see and aids in hunting
also aids in camouflage against predators although penguins are very fast underwater so don't have many problems there!

It isn't camoflage. Polar bears actually don't live anywhere near penguins, they are on opposite sides of the world.
They are the colour they are for no particular reason, but I'd imagine it's because black is the best insulator of heat.

It's because in 1926 they took the colors of Pittsburgh and then got sued by the Boston Bruins after taking the colors again in 1967 but won the case from the precedent of having the colors in 1926.

when penguins swim underwater, the black back feathers hide them from predators who may be swimming above them, the white underside keeps them hidden from prey swimming under them. they do also use those feathers to keep themselves warm.
