cost depends on your choice of travelling,staying and other time you have for the trip.
if u have a lot of time and would like to spend less than 1000 INR u should choose economy class in train or a passenger train.
if time is more important then u can choose air travel.but it costs minimum 5000 INR only for travel.

From Mumbai to Chennai by Train the cost ranges from Rs 1500/- to 3250/- with Return to Mumbai
AC First Class for single return ticket is Rs.5170/-
By Air the rates range from Rs. 4000/- to Rs.6250/- One Way
The Return trip would totally cost Rs. 8000/- by flight
You can also travel by AC Bus with Return to Bombay for Rs.5400/- Total
The Trains that travel from Dadar to Chennai Central run on all days for minimum period of 23 Hours

this is so typical problem for every one, bcoz there is no accurate answer of this. around from mumbai to chennai around 550 kms, then fair is about in reservation some 700/- approx and in general some 350/- approx.
