The growth rate is supersonic. Here are the reasons:
1. Fifty years back, India had only a few corrupt government servants. Today, 90 percent of the government servants are forced to be corrupt.
2. Out of the 4 pillars of the democracy, the legislature also has become corrupt as we can see from the cases in the courts of law against the politicians.
3. The Press also has fallen a prey to corruption.
3. The public is either too cynical or too facile to check corruption in the government or of the politicians.

India's economic growth has averaged 7 percent over the past four years, but there are signs it is slowing. Experts think the massive country could have done even better had it not been for widespread corruption in its political system.
A World Economic Forum survey ranked India 45th out of 49 countries on the honesty of its officials and 44th in the effectiveness of laws protecting shareholders.
Despite its size, India garnered less than $1.7 billion in net foreign direct investment in 1996.
Total private capital flows into India -- $8 billion in 1996 -- are dwarfed by amounts going into such countries as China, Mexico and Brazil.
To get elected in India, politicians depend on patronage and spoils. Observers say that has engendered massive intervention in the economy, as politicians seek control over assets that can be distributed or give favorable treatment to companies that support them.
Such basic procedures as the enforcement of contracts or the ability to get a license or permit depend on who is in power. That kind of uncertainty serves as a drag on long-term investment.
The uncertainty also forces companies to engage in bribery and tax evasion -- undermining the credibility of the private sector in the eyes of the voters.

very long back Indira Gandhi said that corruption is a universal phenamenan and it has spread to all sphers like cancer. If one is a dishonest, the time has come to suspect whether he is a inefficiant to become corrupt. It has taken for granted in the society. In the name of Corporate culture, we are in one sence praying corruption as a source of development also.

Have you heard of the proverbial joke of a child refusing to come out of its mother's womb unless bribed?
